Clemson Media Relations Specialist Wins Silver Medal in International Contest

Jim Melvin, director of communications and marketing for Clemson University’s College of Science, has won a silver medal in the 2018 Association for Communication Excellence’s critique and awards program.

Melvin won in the category “Writing for Magazines” for an article titled “When Paths Converge,” which featured a mother and daughter conducting nearly identical floristic research on the shores of Lake Issaqueena more than 40 years apart.

In 2017, Melvin won the gold medal in the magazine category for “Appalachian Odyssey,” which featured Clemson University scientist Rob Baldwin. Also in 2017, Melvin won silver in the category “Writing for the Web” for a media release titled “Clemson scientists unraveling astonishing complexities of the butterfly proboscis,” about the research of university entomologist Peter Adler and materials science and engineer Kostya Kornev.

In 2016, Melvin won a gold medal in “Writing for the Web” for a story titled “Clemson forestry professor takes students to magical mountains.”
